If your cat is happy he/she will meow at a high pitched voice and generally they will initiate the play with you. Some kittens like to lay down in their bed and relax, they may also groom themselves because they feel happy and relieved from any stress.
Apart from these signs, there are other unique things that your cat might do to tell you that she/he is happy, these signs are the form of communications that you and your cat have developed over the time you have spent together.
Also, keep a track on the times your kitty is sad or in pain, low pitched yowls, a sudden show of irritation or anger and purring to comfort oneself. These things might be a sign of pain due to separation anxiety, depression from hormonal imbalance, and other health-related issues like irritation due to parasites like fleas and ticks, feeling lethargic due to gastrointestinal worm infestations, and reluctance to walk or play due to joint pain.
